We celebrated International Women's Day at the Andover Estate  in Holloway on Saturday 12th March. The occasion was marked by exceptional women joining together and sharing their cultures. It was a colourful, multicultural event filled with special energy that these diverse and talented women all shared. There was traditional dancing, singing, music, costumes and great food with an amazing sense of community and celebration of womanhood.

The event was organised by the Finsbury Park Women's Group Network, which Holloway Neighbourhood Group helps to co-ordinate.

Finding a home

Popping in to the Stress Project for the first time last month took me straight back to the early 90’s and a dingy low ceilinged basement of a grim tower block in Kings Cross.

I was just back from a year learning acupressure in San Francisco, and the basement was the home of the Immune Development Trust (IDT), a charity offering complementary therapies to people with immune related conditions – in the main,  cancer, ms, hiv/aids and lupus.

When I stumbled down the damp steps on my first day, I had no idea how lucky I was. Over the next years, IDT held me as I found my feet in my new career; it welcomed me into a family of fellow practitioners; and enabled me to get my hands on hundreds of beautiful and extraordinary bodies. Perhaps most important of all, it gave me the chance to work with clients who almost certainly wouldn’t have been able to afford it otherwise. What a gift that was! My nearly 10 years at IDT was a fantastic apprenticeship. It gave me great confidence and a huge passion.

So, walking through the doors at the Stress Project it was a treat to be welcomed into an environment that felt familiar. Just like at IDT it felt like home.

As a trainer of over 18 years I really appreciate what the Stress Project offers.
I’ve seen so many wonderful practitioners struggle with the transition from training into practice - a journey that takes so much courage and determination. Finding bodies to practice on is very often the first ‘impossible’ obstacle, so for that alone it’s reassuring for me to be able to recommend the Stress Project to my students.

More than that though, is the fact that the Stress Project offers the chance to new (and not so new) therapists to gain and share experience in a safe and supportive environment, and in my experience, that more than anything is the best way to lay the foundations for a successful career doing work that you love.
